How Can We Make Our Schools Safer - 2578 Words

These days, school safety is one of the most important parts of running a good school. So how can we make our school, safer and a better school overall? Project Citizen is a project that seventh-graders do annually. The students take one problem and find a way to solve it. The goals of Project Citizen are straightforward. There are four steps to Project Citizen. First, the students need to identify a problem in the school or community. Then, they research that problem. The students need to finish about twenty tasks, each related to a category of school safety. Next, they evaluate possible solutions to that problem. The solutions are put into a research paper, which is what this paper is. After that, they develop public policy ideas.†¦show more content†¦Also, students themselves would worry about their safety, and we want Edgewood to be as safe as possible. Lastly, when someone feels safe, they are more likely to concentrate and learn more. This shows that school safety is in everyone’s best interests. Overall, Edgewood does not have adequate school safety, which is a problem. It is important to have good policies f or each category, social/emotional safety, building safety, concussion safety, technology safety, and drill safety. Bullying can be very destructive to a child, and it can get really out of control. A building that holds hundreds of people needs to be secure and safe. Concussions are a very serious brain injury that often happens to kids and teens during sports. Technology is one of the easiest ways to get hurt. Not physically, but emotionally and/or mentally. Drills are a way to prepare for emergency situations, even if they are unlikely to happen. Bullying could lead to self-harm, depression, and even suicide. These are horrible things, and are best to be avoided. There are two sides to this: security and physical building strength. If a stranger got in unauthorized, then all the students would be in danger. Also, if the building is not well-maintained, it can collapse or become contaminated with dangerous materials. If concussions go untreated, they can lead to further brain damage that may be permanent.
